Introduction:

You’re relaxing at the Bouncing Beholder again. Ever since the “drinking contest,” things have been tense between the two establishments. Barley has been treating you with discount rates and better-made drinks since then. You don’t know why, but you also don’t question it.

“Hey there!” An excited squeak comes from behind you. You’re eating the tavern’s special for the night: beef and onion. It’s not bad, but it’s just a slab of beef and onion on your plate.

You glance around, the barstool creaking as you turn, but you can’t find the source of the noise.

“…down here,” the voice says but is now less enthused. You oblige, putting your knife and fork down.

A gnome post worker bounces from foot to foot beside your shins. She offers a hand up and you take it; she shakes yours vigorously with a tight squeeze. You don’t remember waiting for a letter.

“Nice to meet ya, I’m Ewalme. I saw your posting for help with the Laconic Ruins nearby. Something about runic translation? I wanna help. Can I join you guys?”

She seems so ready to go. You notice she has a backpack bulging with rope, canteens, and torches. Her eager face grins up at you. It’s hard, but you have to let her know you already cleared out that labyrinth last week after help from “The Darkest” dwarf in town.

“Uh–I have some bad news, actually…” you start, but she clambers up the stool next to you and sits down, leaning in close.

“You seem like a great person. I can just tell,” she says, stroking your shoulder. “I’ve been having some trouble peeing recently, you know? Like–it feels all crampy in my stomach and then just nothing comes out. Has that happened to you?”

You’re taken aback by the admission, but she doesn’t seem to notice. Instead, Ewalme squeaks, snatches your steak knife, and hurls it across the room. It buries itself in the wall above the stone mantle.

“My knife,” you exclaim. “What the hell?!”

“Oh, sorry, you just got caught me off guard with the blade nearby,” Ewalme says. “Do you want me to get it for you?” She grins. “Is it a quest?”
