Introduction:
The grass parts and a hare appears. The cute, fuzzy animal’s large eyes stare straight into yours, unafraid and confident. The hare approaches, one paw after another in a beeline towards you. Then, it stops placing one paw on your boot.
“Excuse me,” it says in a light, feminine voice. “I’m looking for the town of Staedus. Have you heard of it?”
“Yeah, I have,” you say and rub your forehead. It’s turning out to be a strange day. “It’s up the road a ways. I’m heading there now.”
“Bloody good luck, that is,” the hare responds and hops along by the side of you. You walk in awkward silence, not sure how to address the weird animal.
“Ah, so I’ve never spoken to a hare before,” you say.
“And why would you?” She huffs back. “Our kind don’t generally consort.”
You nod at that, but something doesn’t sit right with you. You’ve heard of talking animals before. They’re generally in street fairs or hanging around spellcasters.
“Um, Ms. Rabbit?”
“I’m a hare, no worries. Common misconception. And you can call me Hildegard.”
“Right, Hildegard, why are you going to Staedus?”
The hare looks up at you, stopping to sniff with its tiny nose. You sense it’s weighing you. “Well, I’d need to ask for help at some point, I suppose. Better start now,” she half-whispers. “I’ve misplaced my witch and the last place I heard she was about was Stadeus town. I’m heading there now to see where she’s gone off to.”
“That’s reasonable,” you say. “But how are you going to look around the whole place? It’s a village. Surely, you’ll draw attention.”
The hare continues hopping along. “I’ll sort that out when I get there. One problem at a time.”
